A Poem for the World
If I could capture the world, Just like a child with a bubble, I would watch over it And guard its existence. If I could be done with the scarred flags And bury sorrow in the past, I would embroider a future of intertwined verses And turn the shield into a flower. If we wanted to close our eyes To so much odious imagery, We would open our souls and feel The flag of sorrow and the fatherland of flowers. If I could sculpt a poem, I would fill the verses with white sparrows, In every feather a colour, an ideal, To together form whiteness. If my words were sure, I would rhyme Kant with Baudelaire, Hegel with García Lorca, Kieerkergaard with Pessoa. If I was brave, I would erase with caresses, What the sun rhymes with shells and syrup To convert the Azores into fates Outside the density of time. Poets of the world let us unite soul to soul And plaster Granada to Castilla, Baghdad and Banes to New York and Bangkok, With naked hands, no gold nor marble! Let us distil sweetness from the verses, Hope, and beyond vain words, A liquor which intoxicates the human being With poetry whose rhyme is liberty. |
