In the Woods
We were, she and I, in that charming April Of the love that begins in a glare. O memories! O time! Vanished hours! We went, hearts full of untold ecstasy, Together in the woods, hand in hand. To take the trail we left the road, We left the path to walk in the grass. The sky shone in her beautiful eyes; She said: I love you! and I felt like God. Sometimes, near a spring, we sat a little. How often I showed the tree branches her breast! Blushing like the marble nymphs, You bathed your bare feet, white like milk Then we went off as dreamers. It seemed to me, looking at the daisies around us, The cheerful buttercups, the secret periwinkles And the fresh morning glories, sprayed with pure water That these little flowers were all little kisses Fallen during the journey from my mouth to your mouth As we were walking; and the timid cave And the wild blackberry and the rock, bald and black Envious, whispered: What says tonight Diane with such chaste eyes, the star goddess, Upon seeing all the grass on the bottom of the trodden woods? |
