The Tower Chronicles 1: The Valley of the
Wolves
Dana said nothing. She just kept staring at him, and then wondered what she would do without him, without his smile, without the honest look from those sparkling green eyes, without the gentleness of his voice. And she had to admit that after the discussion with her family, Kai was the only one that seemed close and real. He was the only one that she had left. She felt the urge to hug him, but controlled herself. She knew from experience that he didn’t like being touched. She then asked herself why; a sudden suspicion gripped her mind. She lifted her hand slowly to stroke her friend’s cheek. He seemed to hesitate a moment, but did not pull away. And Dana’s hand went cleanly through Kai’s body, as if he wasn’t there. The girl felt an irrational terror. She waved her arm in a desperate attempt to touch something, but Kai’s figure, although it was perfectly visible, seemed as impalpable as fog. Dana sighed, and her desire to hug Kai, to keep him by her side, grew to be unbearable. The boy understood what was happening inside her, and gave her a pained look. ‘I exist on a different level than you’, he said. “I’m sorry, I can’t do anything. We can be together forever, and eternally separated.” Dana sighed again. She was a simple peasant, who couldn’t understand those subtleties. And she was only eight. She curled up under her blanket and turned her back to Kai, as she lost her gaze in the stars that she saw through the small window. Suddenly she felt something behind her, and she didn’t need to turn around to know that Kai was lying by her side. She even felt his arm around her waist. She didn’t notice it as something physical, but as something similar to the touch of the breeze, to the warmth of a ray of sunlight, to the freshness of a rainy day. However, it comforted her infinitely. She sighed, and cuddled up close to Kai. She couldn’t touch him, but she could feel him, and her whole heart responded to that presence. ‘Don’t leave me alone, Kai,’ she pleaded in a whisper. ‘Don’t ever leave me’. ‘Never’, the boy promised, and his voice sounded very close to Dana’s ear, in the depths of her mind and the depths of her heart. |

Dana no dijo nada. No me dejes nunca. |
